Multipoint Lock Mechanisms Explained: How Your UPVC Door Actually Locks

Most Manchester homes have UPVC doors with multipoint locks, but few people understand how they work. Here's the plain English explanation.

If your Manchester home has a UPVC or composite front or back door, it almost certainly uses a multipoint locking system. Understanding how this system works helps you recognise problems early, maintain your locks properly, and make informed decisions when upgrades or repairs are needed.

    What is a multipoint lock?

A multipoint lock is a locking system that secures the door at multiple points along its height — typically 3, 5, or 7 points. When you lift the handle and turn the key, the mechanism engages hooks, rollers, and/or deadbolts that extend into keeps (metal plates) fixed into the door frame.

    The components:

Gearbox (centre case): The main body of the mechanism, located behind the door handle. This is the "brain" of the system — when you lift the handle, it drives all the locking points simultaneously.

Euro cylinder: The lock that your key operates. It sits through the gearbox and controls the deadbolt throw. This is the part that's vulnerable to lock snapping if it's a standard (non-anti-snap) cylinder.

Hooks: Metal hooks that swing out from the door edge and engage with keeps in the frame. They provide strong resistance to the door being pulled or levered open.

Rollers (mushroom cams): Rotating cam-shaped bolts that press the door tightly against the frame, improving the seal and providing moderate locking strength.

Deadbolt: A solid steel bolt (usually at the gearbox location) that extends into the frame. This is the primary security locking point.

Common problems and what causes them:

Stiff handle: Usually worn gearbox, misaligned door, or keeps not aligned with locking points. Handle won't return: Spring failure in the gearbox — needs mechanism replacement. Won't lock fully: Door has dropped, causing misalignment between hooks/rollers and their keeps. Key won't turn: Worn euro cylinder, debris in the mechanism, or gearbox failure.
