BS3621 Lock Standard Explained: What Manchester Homeowners Must Know
BS3621 is the lock standard your insurance company requires. Here's what it means and how to check if your Manchester home complies.
BS3621 is a British Standard for thief-resistant locks. It's the single most important lock standard for Manchester homeowners with wooden doors, because virtually every home insurance policy requires BS3621 approved locks on all final exit doors.
What BS3621 means:
A lock carrying the BS3621 standard has been independently tested by the British Standards Institution (BSI) and certified to meet specific requirements for:
- Bolt strength: The bolt must be hardened steel and extend at least 14mm into the frame- Lever mechanism: Must have at least 5 levers with at least 1,000 key differs (unique key combinations)- Anti-pick: The lever mechanism must resist picking attempts- Anti-drill: The bolt and mechanism must resist drilling- Key security: Keys must be registered and controlled
How to identify a BS3621 lock:
Look for the BSI Kitemark on the lock faceplate (the metal strip visible on the edge of the door). The Kitemark is a heart-shaped symbol with the letters "BSI" inside it, alongside the number BS3621. If your lock doesn't show this marking, it may not be BS3621 approved.
Why it matters for Manchester homeowners:
If your Manchester home has wooden external doors (common in Victorian and Edwardian properties across Chorlton, Didsbury, Levenshulme, Prestwich, and Stretford), your insurance policy almost certainly requires BS3621 locks. If you're burgled and your locks don't meet this standard, your insurer could reject your claim.
What if my locks aren't BS3621?
If your existing mortice locks don't carry the BS3621 Kitemark, we can upgrade them. In most cases, the new lock fits into the existing mortice pocket in the door, making the upgrade straightforward. We supply and fit BS3621 locks from ERA, Union, and Yale.
